In each of the Arctic communities identified The North West
Company operates a combination of food and general merchandise
stores through which Inuit Art Marketing purchases sculpture from
local carvers on a cash basis.
The sculpture is carefully packed and shipped from the community
directly to our Toronto showroom utilizing mainly Aboriginal owned
and operated airlines such as Air Inuit and First Air. Our buyers
in Toronto are in daily contact with the communities and purchase
each carving working with store staff and the individual carver,
through video phone technology, to arrive at an agreed upon price.
Once received in Toronto each carving is authenticated and
registered with an eight digit code cross referring the Artist,
community, and subject and identified with the "Igloo"
tag as a genuine Inuit Art carving. These tags are registered and
distributed by the Canadian government and can only be acquired by
bona fide agents such as Inuit Art Marketing.
This control is in place to protect Artists from mass produced
imitations which can be found in the Canadian market place
consequently only carvings displaying the tag identified below
should be considered individual works of art.
